30th October - Bass and cod with Mark

Back to the Shoreham beaches for another mix and match cod and bass trip. One rod long for the cod, the other in the margins for a bass. And phase one of the mission was accomplished pretty quickly, with the codling pictured above. It had the head of a four pound fish, but the body did not live up to the head and it weighed in at a little over 2lb only. And sadly, that was theonly interest we got from the whiskered one all night.

The bass rod was once again subjected to some head stealing, although on this evening the whiting were about, worrying the long range squid, so it was quite possible whiting were responsible on the close rod as well. An impromptu firework display on the next beach certainly didnt help the spikey prospects, but what forced the suspension in the end was the swells and the weed, making it just too dificult to keep a bait down in close.

The long range rod was getting some attention from small fish, but the good thing about fishing with a size 6/0 is they mostly bounce off. Every now and then a better one will manage to intercept the huge hook though!! We fished the tide up, and a bit down, but there certainly isnt an abundance of cod out there at the moment, most bags being occasional fish, and with the fishing heading towards the side of boredomn, we finished it a little after high. Mission 50% accomplished!!
