Marina East Arm

FLipper

"Flipper" feeding hard

Popped down to the marina for a bait gathering session today. Shoals of mackerel were small, and running through with some urgency. The reason became apparent about 06:00 when a HUGE bottlenosed dolphin began feeding hard about 800/1000 yards off the wall. It was seen later that day by the marina wardens 100 yards off the West arm. I wonder if it is the same huge fish I pictured in the Solent in 2005? Terrible picture, but I dont have the long range gear I crave.

Striped pouting

"Striped" pouting

There was some discussion recently about stripes on pouting. It is my belief that pouting have the ability to "switch" these stripes on, and you are likely to catch one from a kelp environment when the sea is clear. When that same sea is cloudy, you dont seem to get stripey pouting!! Today the sea was calm, and the pouting from the inshore looked like this.......
