16th October - Bassing with Ryan and Karl

Autumn Squid

Autumn Squid

Back out on the bass trail, and a repeat perfomance of the previous night. Knowing that the cephalods might be there, I stocked up heavily on pout and walked out onto the shingle with 30 in the livebait bucket. Fishing two rods on livebaits, one on anchored mackerel cut, and one freelining, I felt that should a spikey wander through the front of us, it had enough choice to be at least fooled by one of our traps. However, the attentions of the cephalods were worse than the previous night, as pout after pout got knobbled! But with one major difference. One of the runs, instead of pulling slowly away, screamed off in a great hurry. "Thats a bass" I said, as Karl wound the anchor lead back to the bait. But it wasnt. Instead, the one in about twenty squid that had attacked our pout this night had messed up, and fallen foul of the size 4 treble. I think I will be more prepared for next autumn, and clear seas, as if the bass are going to be kept at bay by these outsized cephalods, then I want to be in a position to at least take full advantage of such tasty seasonal fare!!
