Marina and River Ouse

Finally - May Weed clearing out

This is more like it!! Sea without May Weed

Desperately short of bait, as the may weed has even prevented decent shoals of mackerel, I went out onto the West arm to look for mackerel, whilst fishing a bream rod as a distraction. The mackerel were reasonably obliging in the early morning, and I took about ten. The bream were also happy to feed, and I caught about half a dozen. It also looked good for a squid, and young Ben Arnold had caught one (VERY small) on the East arm the previous day, so I dropped down a jig.

Cuttle from West arm

Not a squid - But still Excellent bait!!

It wasnt a squid that took the jig, but the solitary take was from a different cephalod, a cuttle fish. No problem though, as they are every bit as good as bait, if not better!!. Witht he fishing tailing off as the day got later, I decided to pack up and head up the river to assess the mullet situation.

First mullet of the year

First Mullet of 2009

I must admit it was nice to be chasing mullet again. The previous day I had popped to Southease, and fished for a couple of hours. A couple of bites, but no connection, and the only thing of note was my car getting broken into and my mate Steve's jacket being stolen from it. Today was quite different though, with plenty of bites for two connections, two fish of about 1.5lb. Not huge, but a nice way to start the mulleting year!!
