1st August - a.m. Mulleting on the Ouse

First cast success!!

Bruno with super fine Thick Lipped mullet, 2lb exactly.

Back out with Bruno, and this time Mullet were the intended target. We got up to the spot plenty early, as I wanted to really feed the swim up, with the hope of a good bag. I showed Bruno my very simple mullet rig, and bait preperation. The importance of feed, and how you need to build a swim and get the mullet feeding hard to get any kind of success. We then fed two handfuls of feed, and deployed the hook baits. I was busy explaining how it would likely be a couple of hours before any success, when Bruno's tip slammed round and he found himself attached to the very lively 2lb fish pictured above. About an hour later I hooked a similar sized fish, but bumped it off, or rather the fish bumped me off by very cleverly swiming sideways in shallow water, dislodging the hook in the process!! And that was all the fish hooked for the rest of the session. At the usually hot state of tide, a few fish did show interest, but we just couldnt get them really heads down. A very interesting session, and I cant wait to get back up there. But the main objective achieved, Bruno got his first thick lipped mullet. Dont think it will be his last though....!!

1st August Evening - Shoreham West arm

Stuart and sole

Stuart and Sole

Back out with Stuart again this evening, for some sole searching. He had bought along his young cousin, Michael, looking for some general fishing, in a quest to build their knowledge for things other than bass, which Stuart has recently been mastering without any worries!! I had deliberately booked them in on the short tides with sole in mind, and the obvious choice in light of recent catches was the Shoreham West arm. Armed with nothing more fancy than harbour ragworm, oh, and some prototype rigs imminently about to be released under the DVice brand. An boy oh boy, did those rigs do some damage!!

Barrie with Weaver

Barry with Weaver...!!

It certainly wasnt just sole that enjoyed our offerings. Barrie had eels, flounders and Weavers as well, Michael landed a very pretty golden grey mullet and black bream as well as sole, and Stuart found a Red mullet to add beauty as well as variety.

Sunset

THe edge of the weather front.

The weather had been terrible, persistent rain. But an hour in to the session, and the edge of the weatherfront cleared us, leaving a lovely evening.

Stuart and Red Mullet

We actually had a hell of a lot of bites, and I suspect that Golden Grey Mullet werre responsible for a lot of them. But as we were targetting sole, I had instructed the guys to sit on their hands until the rods bent over. In hindsight, I think the fish toll would have risen had I got them holding their rods. But, it was a long way from terrible, the rigs really doing their thing.

Double shots of sole

Yours truly with a sole double shot!

Smallest sole

Andy Colmer with the smallest Sole of the session

The mission to find Stuart and Michael some sole had certainly been succesful. But I think the most appreciated fish was Michaels Golden Grey mullet. Even the damp and cold, and lateness of the hour couldnt wipe the grin off his face when just before midnight we reeled in for the last time.

As well as the bonus species, the six rigs being fished that night acounted for something in the region of 35 sole!!!
