April 2005

April has been a very good month especially on Brighton Marina, with the Mackerel turning up in early April, large fish tight with muscle, chasing the enormous shoals of whitebait that have accumulated already, owing to the mostly calm seas we have experienced this month. But when they turned up they got a shock. There were huge shoals of herring that had delayed their departure due to the amount of food available!! This in turn seemed to bring the bass in a little earlier, with a shoal of bass seen rounding up herring in the entrance to Brighton marina itself!! This is behavior we dont normaly see until late June, when they hound the whitebait, sardine and mackerel. All in all it is looking like being a very good year. In addition, on some tides there have been very good numbers of very good plaice, to 2lb's.

And as for my fishing?? Well, it is severley curtailed this year, as I now have the fishermans friend Cafe to run on the short arm of the marina, so my trips will mostly be weekends evening, night and early morning. However, these are also the best times to fish, so lets see what happens. I have to be in London during the week now, so there will be more stuff from Reading and District angling waters hopefuly.

So, my trips in April. Well, apart from some herring sessions sorting out the bait for the pike later in the year, and a mackerel session to try out a wonderful new rod and reel combo that I aquired from e-bay, there have been only a few. And here they are.....................
