Robert with mackerel
The brief was find something for the lads to cook for their tea. Normally not a problem by the first of June, but this year with the may rot refusing to clear out of the seas, a much bigger issue. My day satarted with prawn collection, then I met up with the crew for the day, Peter, Richard, Robert and Jamie. We gave the float and prawn a good hour and a half, but aside from a couple of missed takes, nothing doing. With the visibility declining in the sea, we attempted to escape it by heading out along the arm. Still not great, but we got stuck in. Now it was feathering for mackerel, with a bream rig being cast in the hope of a tidy black bream. Fish hadnt read the script though, and it was mackerel that fell to the bream rod as it was cast, and Robert having the fun of retireving the fishy. Apart from the mackerel, the only other fish that fell in the now dirty water, was an outsized sand smelt to Garfish strip fished on an Essex rig. (twelve foot rig body, three droppers all at the top. Southend pier garfish rig!!)
Everybody did well to endure the fishing on a wet miserable day with an Easterly wind blowing in our faces for the duration. But eventually, the lure of Brighton central got the better of the lads. Not suprising, on a day with so little action. It was my great pleasure to guide for you guys, and hope to have the opportunity to do it again when a few more fish are showing on our patch.
