Jason Upham with BIG mullet

Devon Fishing Guide Jason Upham showing how to catch BIG mullet.

If you happen to be lucky enough to be visiting the gorgeous county of Devon, then you might want to consider short cutting to fishing success and enjoy a trip out with the fishing machine that is Jason Upham. Holding a rod almost as soon as he could walk, and having a fantastic contact web of commercial and rod and line anglers alike, if there are fish moving on this coastline, Jason is aware of it. Based in Brixham he is in the very heart of some excellent fishing, for mostly larger fish.

The Devon coastline is unique, in both the variety of fish to be found, and the fact that many of them grow outsized when compared to the rest of the UK. Flounders, for example, are smallish flatfish, and a 2lb fish anywhere else in the UK is cause for celebration. In the beautiful "English riviera" estuaries of Devon, each year fish in the 4lb+ bracket are there for the taking. And Jason can take you to where the action is hottest.

Species. Last year, Jason was curious to see just how many fish were around his patch of coast, and set out to see how many different varieties he could find. The end result, was the following 35 different species. This year, Jason is confident to make it to 40 different species. If Species targets are what floats your boat, Jason can certainly help you to put a big dent in the fishes you are missing.

The season for Jason is year round. During the bleak months of January thru April the flounders, and outsized Thornback rays are the target. The Summer season is announced by the arrival of huge bull-huss, with double figure fish always being a possibility, although please be warned if you want Huss fishing you do need to be physically very fit, as some of the marks are long hard walks from the car parks. Soon after, the main flow of Summer species arrives, including possibly the biggest Garfish in the UK. Jason's personal best Garfish is over 2lb 13oz, to give some idea about what is available.
